Is Samyang's Mala Ramen A Good Value?

If you can find it at your local Asian grocery store, you’re super lucky! I couldn’t find these in any of the Asian stores I went to, which meant I had to hop on Amazon and purchase a 5-pack from them.

Here are some online options you have if you want to try this flavor. Both Hmart and Amazon(paid link) have it online although pricing and availability may vary.

In the carbonara flavor review, you may recall me saying that it’s still a good value even at higher prices. I still agree with what I said because the quality is just not something you’d find in a lot of cheaper instant ramens. So for value, it’s still great!

What's In A Pack of Mala Ramen?

The Samyang Mala Hot Chicken Ramen has purple theme which certainly helps it stand out. The flame in the background looks similar to the Stew Type package.

Hochi gives us a thumbs up again which we thought was a good sign when we saw it on the jjajang package. Maybe this one will be different. If you guys can see all those peppercorns in the picture, it looks like we’re in for a treat this time.

What’s in the mala package? The package includes a square block of ramen, the spicy sauce, and a packet of dried vegetables.

What Does Samyang's Mala Ramen Taste Like?

When you smell it, you get a hint of szechuan. What is szechuan or sichuan? It’s a type of Chinese cuisine that is spicy, oily, and peppery. It’s not super oily but you can tell the other characteristics are there.

The sauce is kind of weird in this one. When I took my first bite, there was the patent pending initial burst of sweetness. As I kept eating, it either became a savory feeling or the spice was messing with my taste buds. The noodles are always good given that it’s the square ramen and not the circle one.

Is Samyang's Mala Ramen Spicy?

The spice in Samyang’s Mala Ramen felt like it was different. Almost immediately after taking a bite, you would feel the spice hit you like a truck. It wasn’t the usual Samyang ramen spice we’re used to either. If you’re familiar with szechuan food, you know there’s a numbing effect that usually lasts a while. This felt like that but wasn’t too extreme.

Coupled with Samyang’s sauce, this was pretty spicy. As I kept eating, the spice would come way after I swallowed the noodles. Even after I was done eating, the spiciness burns your throat and lips. Even breathing would burn my mouth. The prolonged spice effect was what got me for this one. I had to take out the ice cream, which helped a lot!
