Overview: Trader Joe's French Onion Macaroni & Cheese

Trader Joe’s French Onion Macaroni & Cheese is a unique kind of mac and cheese I’ve never heard of before. The positives are the macaroni. They’re still soft and amazing. The flavors are what I’d imagine French Onion soup to taste like. Not sure if I’m a fan or not.

The downsides are the lack of cheese, croutons, and price. Of course if something is called mac and cheese, you should include a good amount of cheese! The croutons are just there. If they were gone, I wouldn’t even notice. For the price, it’s hard to recommend.

Price

Trader Joe’s French Onion Macaroni & Cheese costs $4.99. I believe this is their most expensive frozen mac and cheese. It also feels the beefiest compared to its siblings. Let’s see if this mac and cheese is worth the extra price.

Cooking Method #1: Microwave

Like other Trader Joe’s mac & cheeses, there are two heating methods. The first method involves using the microwave (1200 watt):

  1. Remove tray from box and puncture holes with fork in plastic film.

  2. Microwave on high for 7 to 8 minutes, or until cooked thoroughly.

  3. Let stand for 1 minute.

  4. Remove film, stir, and serve.

Cooking times may vary depending on microwave. If you know your microwave wattage, check out this microwave calculator!

Caution: Product will be hot!

Cooking Method #2: Conventional Oven

The second way is through an oven:

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F.

  2. Remove tray from box and remove film.

  3. Place on a baking sheet.

  4. Bake on the middle rack of the oven for 45 to 50 minutes, or until cooked thoroughly.

  5. Let stand 1 minute.

  6. Stir and serve.

Caution: Product will be hot!

Impressions & Taste

Although it is pricey, it does seem bigger than other mac and cheeses from Trader Joes. There are plenty of croutons on top. I won’t lie, it doesn’t look like the most appetizing thing. Let’s give it a try though.

After heating in the oven for 45 minutes, it was still a bit cold. I reheated it for a little more and may have overcooked it a bit. I should probably use the microwave next time…

The macaroni is still as good as I remember from the previous mac and cheeses. It’s soft and doesn’t require much effort to chew. The amount of cheese is on the lower end and it does have a minor powdery aftertaste. It’s like those cheese packets from pizza places.

In terms of flavor, it’s very unique. You can taste the hints of onion throughout as well as visually see small pieces of onions here and there. Kinda reminds me of sour cream & onion chips but with less intense flavor.

One questionable thing in this particular mac and cheese is the croutons. They are crunchy when not stirred in. After a mixing them in, they become soggy and lose their crunchy nature. I’m not sure why they added these. Perhaps I’m missing something.
