Overview: Trader Joe's Spicy Salmon Gyoza

Trader Joe’s Description: Our spicy twist on this Asian inspired traditional dumpling treat combines tender salmon, savory seasonings, and bold, sriracha-style heat. Enjoy as a crispy, pan-fried appetizer, or drop into a summer pot of ramen for a sensational boost of flavor.

Verdict: Trader Joe’s Spicy Salmon Gyoza was suprisingly delicious! The gyoza wrapper is delicate and chewy (when steamed). The unique filling is packed with a creamy salmon and crunchy vegetable mixture that explodes in your mouth.

It’s sad to see it gone so quickly. However, I’m disappointed at the “spice” this has. Would I recommend this? For it’s price, no you don’t get enough gyoza. It’s a unique and yummy dumpling though!

Price

At Trader Joe’s, you can find their Spicy Salmon Gyoza for $4.99 USD, which is pretty darn expensive. The package is smaller than its chicken and pork counterparts as well. Let’s see if these dumplings are worth the price.

Heating Instruction #1 (Pan Fry)

Good news is there are similar heating methods. However, the instructions are a little different.

The first way is through pan-frying.

  1. Add 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup water (depending on number of dumplings) to non-stick skillet with a lid.

  2. Add dumplings.

  3. Cover and heat over medium high heat until water is absorbed (about 3-5 minutes).

  4. Lift lid and add 1-2 tablespoons of oil.

  5. Swirl pan and re-cover immediately.

  6. Allow to cook until bottoms are browned (about 1-2 minutes).

  7. Serve right away with your favorite dipping sauce.

Be careful when handling because oil can fly onto you!

Heating Instruction #2 (Steaming)

The second way of heating involves steaming:

  1. Place dumplings seam side up in a steamer basket or double boiler over boiling water.

  2. Cover and steam for 6-8 minutes.

  3. Serve right away with your favorite soy or dipping sauce.

Be careful not to burn yourself!

Heating Instruction #3 (Microwave)

The third method of heating uses the microwave (1200 watt):

  1. Place dumplings seam side up on a microwave safe plate.

  2. Cover with wet paper towels.

  3. Microwave on high for 1 minute to 1 1/2 minutes or until soft and heated through.

  4. Serve immediately with your favorite soy or dipping sauce.

Microwave cooking times may vary depending on oven wattage. If your microwave isn’t 1200 watts, check out this microwave calculator!

Heating Instruction #4 (Soups)

The last method is simple and straightforward using soups:

  1. Add dumplings to your favorite broth.

  2. Gently boil for 1-2 minutes or until soft and heated through.

A very easy heating method that allows you to stuff dumplings in your mouth in no time!

Taste

This unique combination is something you’d probably see at a high-end Japanese restaurant. A soft, chewy dumpling wrapper surrounding a creamy salmon filling. It’s accompanied by satisfying crunches from either the edamame, carrots, or water chestnuts. As this creamy, flavorful filling is swallowed away, the sriracha leaves a very small zing.

Trader Joe’s Spicy Salmon Gyoza seems like a delicacy that some people would enjoy but others wouldn’t. I’ve was surprised at how good this was. I enjoyed the wrapper for it’s delicate but chewy nature.

The filling is extremely flavorful with it’s creamy, delicate salmon and crunchy veggies. The ratio of wrapper to filling was incredible! Every bite had salmon and veggies in it. However, the disappointing part of this gyoza was the sriracha. I wish it was a little spicier!

Dipping Sauce

I’ve decided to try Trader Ming’s Gyoza Dipping Sauce to see how good it is. For a price of $2.49 USD, it’s not bad but you can always use your own sauces. I felt that this sauce is most effective with the dumpling wrapper.

It adds a burst of sharp flavor you won’t forget anytime soon. When it comes to the filling, this is sauce is alright. By that, I mean you could do just fine without any sauce. Most of the fillings from Trader Joe’s don’t need any flavor enhancers.

This sauce tastes similar to those at Asian dumpling houses. It’s usually a mixture of soy sauce and rice vinegar. Trader Ming’s version adds extra bits like cilantro, sesame oil, ginger, etc. I can’t taste every ingredient in the sauce but it’s still very flavorful. Most people will definitely enjoy this sauce. It’s tough to get tired of something that tastes so good.
